Today is ANZAC Day here in New Zealand and Australia. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Today is the anniversary of the first major joint military action by the Australian and New Zealand armed forces in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign during World War I. During the Gallipoli campaign, over 8,500 Australian soldiers and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died and, through their bravery and sacrifice, the ANZAC legend was formed.
Today we remember all who gave their lives for their country and
honour our returned servicemen and women.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
(Ode of Rememberance from Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen)
LEST WE FORGET
We will remember them.
